Tu Duc Tomb

WHERE IS TU DUC TOMB?

  • Address: Duong Xuan Thuong village, Cu Chanh canton, Thuy Bieu commune, Thuy Xuan ward, Hue city

In particular, Tu Duc Tomb is honored to be recognized as one of the four most beautiful mausoleums in the ancient capital, recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage.

At the same time, it is an honor to be one of the first historical sites in Vietnam to participate in the 3D digitization museum under the framework of the Google Arts & Culture project.

This alone has helped the resting place of the king with a poetic soul become one of the most famous attractions in Hue, next to Hon Chen Palace, Hue Imperial Citadel, Minh Mang Tomb, Thien Mu Pagoda , etc.

HOW TO GET TO TU DUC TOMB?

Only 6km from the city center, Tu Duc Tomb is one of the few complexes of mausoleums of the Nguyen Dynasty located near the inner city.

So you can move to the mausoleum relatively easily and conveniently with vehicles such as motorbikes or even bicycles, if you don't mind the sweltering heat of Hue, and taxis are fine.

If traveling by motorcycle, you can move according to the following route: Bui Thi Xuan-Huyen Tran Princess. When you reach this road, you continue to go a little further, then you can ask the people on both sides of the road if they will show you the direction to Tu Duc Tomb. On the journey to discover Hue, motorcycles are also a popular means of transport for young people.

UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE OF TU DUC TOMB

Right from the first moment you come here, you will be surprised with the poetic scenery and charming water. If Gia Long Tomb possesses an ancient and quiet beauty, Minh Mang Tomb is the most majestic and magnificent, Khai Dinh Tomb is designed in a style of interference between classical and modern features and with a bit of innovation in construction and decoration materials, the Tu Duc Tomb possesses the most elegant and poetic appearance.

Tu Duc Tomb is built on up to 12 hectares of land and is divided into two main areas, including the electrification area and the mausoleum, with nearly 50 large and small works stretching. The two parts are arranged parallel to each other; the criminal record is Giang Khiem mountain, the posterior occipital is Duong Xuan mountain, and the main road is Luu Khiem lake.

The main and auxiliary works are arranged in harmony, not too dense, lying peacefully among the green pine trees and the small lake all year round. All these create the overall space of the mausoleum while keeping the majesty of the emperor's place and exuding a romantic and soaring breath, just like a king with a poetic soul.

Special Architectural Works In The Tu Duc Tomb

Khiem Cung Mon

This is a two-storey building in the form of a gazebo located on a high platform, in line with Du Khiem Ta. In the middle is Hoa Khiem Palace. This work was built by the lake with the element of "clear road" to "gather water" and "accumulate happiness".

During his lifetime, King Tu Duc often stopped to rest whenever he had the opportunity to visit the mausoleum. This is also where he regularly handles government affairs. When he died, Hoa Khiem Palace was used as a place to worship the tablet of him and the queen.

At Khiem Cung Mon, people often release lotus flowers. When the flowers bloom, the light scent of the wind blows throughout the space, making anyone who comes here feel strangely light and peaceful. In the middle of the lake, there are other small islands for growing flowers and raising animals.

Around Khiem Cung Mon are Khiem Ta and Du Khiem Ta. This is the place where the king often sat reading, reciting poetry and enjoying the charming natural scenery, with the scent of the grasslands floating on all sides of the space and the chirping sounds of birds calling the flock.

Luong Khiem Palace

Located behind Hoa Khiem Palace, Luong Khiem Palace was formerly the place where the king used to come to rest and enjoy tea. Later, when he died, the palace was requisitioned as a place to worship the spirit of his mother, Mrs. Tu D. On the right side of the main hall, On Khiem Luong—the place to store royal belongings.

Minh Khiem Theater

It would be a huge omission if, on the journey to visit Tu Duc Tomb, you accidentally forgot the Minh Khiem Theater. Located to the left of Luong Khiem Palace, Minh Khiem Theater is the place where the king used to go to watch and sing.

This is one of the most impressive architectural works in the mausoleum complex, with exquisitely carved supporting columns and outstanding patterns. Every time the theater closes, from the outside, you will see a shimmering, fanciful scene when countless candles are lit throughout the space. Currently, Minh Khiem Theater is one of the oldest theaters in Vietnam.

Tinh Khiem Island

This place was originally a plot of land for the king to grow flowers and raise animals. Possessing a cool space and a fresh atmosphere, Tinh Khiem Island, with a long canal and 3 curved bridges crossing, will lead you to a cool green pine hill. During his lifetime, the king often chose this place to enjoy flowers, write poetry, and read books.

Tomb Area

The most important work in Tu Duc Tomb, the king's tomb, was built right behind the palace. Moving to Bai Dinh, you will see two rows of military mandarins standing majestically, and behind them is Bi Dinh. This is the place where the 20-ton stone stele is engraved with Khiem Cung Ky, compiled by King Tu Duc himself.

The entire 4,935-word essay is his autobiographical account of his life and past history. He confessed to himself: "Not being wise in knowing people is mine; using people in the wrong place is also my sin; hundreds of things that can't be done are all my sins." In the essay, he also mentioned his risks, illnesses, and feelings when he was still alive.

Behind Bi Dinh is Buu Thanh, built entirely of bricks, on Tieu Khiem Tri. In the middle is the resting place of the most talented and scholarly king of the Nguyen Dynasty. In addition, in Khiem Lang campus, there is an area called Boi Lang. This is the resting place of King Kien Phuc—the 7th king of the Nguyen Dynasty.

Experiencing many ups and downs of history, Tu Duc's tomb is still there as the clearest proof of an illustrious time in the life of the wise and profound king in the past. Similar to other ancient works in Hue, the Tu Duc Tomb is like an ancient painting with a nostalgic aftertaste, but still charming and strangely attractive. If you have the opportunity to return to the ancient capital on a sunny day, you must definitely visit the Tu Duc Tomb!
